Wording of this Handout:

What is the sun? A star.
What is it made of? Hydrogen and helium - two gases.
How far away is it? 93 million miles!
How hot is it? 9,980 degrees F on the surface, and in the centre 27,000,000 degrees F.
How big is it? 865,000 miles in diameter.
How does it bum? By nuclear fusion.
How old is it? About 6000 years.
Where did it come from? God created it.
Why? To rule the day, to give light to the earth, to divide the light from the darkness. Gen. 1:18.

The sun is just right for the earth because:

1. It is very stable. Other stars like the sun often explode, or squirt out flames, These are called solar flares, and in some stars they happen every 100 years or so. Our sun never does this, so we never get burnt to a crisp or hit by dangerous rays,
2. It is just the right size. Other stars are much bigger or much smaller. If the sun was any bigger or smaller. life on earth would die.
3. It is one star not two. There are other stars which spin in pairs. If our sun was like this, we would be cooked and frozen, then cooked and frozen again, over and over.
4. It is in the right place. The sun is moving along one arm of a galaxy, It is in just the right place, where it won't hit other stars and things.
5.It is the right distance from us. If it was too close, earth would be pulled by terrible gravity, and if it was further away earth would drift away.
