Wording of this Handout:

Everyone knows that people come from people! Well of course you know that don't you? You came from your Mum and Dad, and they came from their Mum and Dad, and so on, back and back, through more Mums and more Dads, and more Mums and more Dads, and lots more Mums and lots more Dads. . . Phew! Where does it all end???

Good question. How far can you go back?

Some people can trace their family tree back through many generations.
Many New Zealanders can name the early settlers, who came to this country from England and Europe about 200 hundred years ago in sailing ships. Maoris can name their great, great, great grandmothers and fathers who came from the islands north and west of New Zealand.

But how far back can you trace your family? If you had the records, you could trace your family tree right back through 5000 years of history, to the Middle East, to a family of only eight people. We know the name of only one of these people - a man called Noah, but we don't know his wife's name, or the names of his three daughters and their husbands.

Noah and his family were the only people who survived a huge, tremendous flood, which covered this earth for about a year. There were thousands of people on the earth (perhaps millions) before that flood came, but only Noah and his family escaped, because they lived inside a huge boat.

But where did all the people come from before the great flood? They must have come from their Mums and Dads, and those Mums and Dads must have come from more Mums and Dads. But the further back you go, the fewer people there are, until you come to just two people, a Mum and a Dad.

These two people. were called Adam and Eve.
