Wording of this Handout:
These days the subject of "the Anti-Christ" is quite popular in Christian circles, but just who this character is by no means clear. This is because there are two different interpretations of the same Bible verses about him.
The most popular interpretation is that the Anti-Christ is a coming world dictator, possibly a Jew, possibly a hybrid demon-human cross, who will rebuild the jewish Temple, and cause everyone in the world to receive a 'bar code' on their head or hand - or be killed for not having one. This future leader will have supernatural powers, control all other nations, and order the world's armies, navies, air forces about.
The interpretation which was held by all the great Bible scholars right through the Reformation was that the Anti-Chrsit was the Roman Church's succession of Popes. Because most of the Bible passages about the Anti-Chrsit are found in prophecy, the language is symbolic (not literal) and correct interpretation rules must be used. Today's modern interpretations ignore these rules and take symbols as literal.
Whichever of these two different interpretations you choose, the main thing is to be faithful to Jesus, whether you are persecuted for you stand or not.
I like the 'future' interpretation because it would make a good sequel to the star wars movies!!
May divorce be with you!
The Bible says: "Little children, it is the last time: and as you have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists: whereby we know that it is the last time." 1 John 2:18
