Why will we dig for water?
When all our throats are dry
Why will we spend the effort?
Without a look on high.
Why save that muddy liquid?
And prize it as pure gold
Why disregard the sunbeams?
So new and yet so old.
Why dally near a whirlpool?
Where soon we'll be sucked in
And find our place as captives
Corrupting power of sin.
But in our earthly drinking
Those cisterns have run dry
And we will soon be dying
Unless we face the sky.
For in the earthly cisterns
We labour with all men
To drink the earthly water
But we will thirst again.
The water Jesus gives us
Is altogether pure
Eternally refreshing
Our hearts to reassure.
Straight from His Heart it bubbles
The never-failing spring
The clarity of heaven
Home of the heavenly King.
His worth, and suffering hold us
To show the inner way
We flow with Spirit's waters
And night is turned to day.
