How much our fingers grasp the human way
The way of man, on our performing power
To follow Jesus, be like Him, this day
An earthly way to live, this earthly hour.
Not much is made of being born again
The Spirit's work, to know a life anew
And while so many join with other men
They mix their present life with what is new.
The aim for all, is holding on to Him
When He, with nails is holding on to us
For who but He, could fill us to the brim
And who but He, could lift our seeing thus!
Like David we could say 'Who have we now
In heaven apart from You,' no other way
can there forever be, though we endow
Our lives with other things to fill our day.
For we must hold on tight to our desires
for heaven, or earth, or any other thing
apart from Him. The Spirit lights the fires
Of knowing God, and then our hearts take wing.
To hold Him tight, despite the ways of men
Like Paul, to know Him, as He holds our hands
So tightly held with His, so nail-scarred then
And now forever marked with human brands.
It is not heaven, but Jesus who we seek
For heaven is only heaven when He is there
Forever held, the clasping of the meek
The wondrous Son of God, in glory fair.
