Self-Serving

by John Janzen © 2024

I've heard the Lord is mighty and
In greatness He exudes
I'd rather He just have my back
And settle all my moods

I want Him to stay fairly close
But not so close to see
The things that would cause great offence
To such a one as He

My god should also be real smart
Though not as smart as I
The friendly, jolly grey-haired sort
A grandpa in the sky!

Provide for me what I desire
yet also what I need
I'd like your service with a smile
And make it lightning speed

Imagine if there came a time
Some said I don't belong
The lord I like would intervene
And prove those sinners wrong

My preference for a god would be
That at my beckon call
He saves me, serves me at my will
No strings attached at all

A hampered, hindered, hamstrung god
Replete with irony
Must serve the only god he knows
The god he knows is me
