Christmas Lights

by Kevin Smead © 2024

They hung the lights upon the house,
And marveled at the sight;
The world and all its sorrows seemed
So far removed that night.

Into their world of misery
There came a ray of light;
And just for a fleeting moment
All their cares had taken flight.

The dad forgot the toil of war;
The mom put on a smile;
And Christmas came to bless them all,
For just a little while.

That house which once the lights enhanced
Has fallen to the ground,
And on that little plot of land
No Christmas lights are found.

The mom and dad have passed away,
The kids have grown apart.
That Christmas night has now become
A memory in their heart.

Though miles away, and years removed,
With other kith and kin;
Each year Christmas comes around
And finds them once again.

The Savior that they celebrate
Abides and all is well.
The light of Christmas is the same
No matter where they dwell.

Someday around the throne of God,
The family reunites,
Reality Shall far surpass
The joy of Christmas night.
