The man I hoped to be
not the man I am,
courage left a longing
my life a broken sham.
The man who desired sacred
is left just holding scarred,
purity left a virtue
that often feels too hard.
The man with the brave face
inside is filled with doubts,
unsure of His value
my love – self-pity routs.
The man that never was
is the man the Lord renews,
failure, left with Jesus
His grace, 'this' man pursues.
The man that I am today
not defined by what I do,
for on the cross, He exchanges
my old life for the new.
