Forgiving

by Eugene Whitney © 2024

Why is it so hard to forgive?
What do we have to lose?
Forgiveness is what we all want,
So why would we refuse?

Our anger is much easier
To throw at offenders,
Since anger covers up our hurt
When an offense occurs.

We don't like being vulnerable
Or feeling our own pain.
Our anger is much easier
Than suffering and strain.

Forgiveness means to free someone
From culpability
For how they have offended us
So irresponsibly.

But why should we all bear the pain
When we've been hurt so much?
Just think who has forgiven us,
To get us back in touch.

When we give up our angry stance
And feel our pain instead,
Then we are ready to forgive,
God's love will then be spread.
