Humility

by Eugene Whitney © 2024

Should we be humble and content,
Not needing to be seen,
When it feels much more flattering
To be like those that preen?

Could pride just be a cover for
One's insecurity?
Is arrogance a way to hide
Not knowing how to be?

Perhaps the humble are the wise
Who see more than the rest.
Humility precedes honor
If we can pass the test.

To honor all above ourself
Treats them respectfully,
If we can be content enough
With true humility.

Not having to have the last word
Reveals a humble stance.
Without concern for our prestige,
We give others a chance.

Our pride can never satisfy
Or ever fill our cup.
"Humble yourselves before the Lord
And He will lift you up."
