On the Sea

by Paul Purday

I float the surface of the world
A vast, and a tempestuous sea
And ride through breaking waves that curl
To crash, and nearly cover me
The waters menacingly swirl
And make me doubt that I am free.

Free? Am I free? I crest the waves
And ride the surf like all mankind
As lulled by how the world behaves
But that is not how God designed
For many sink, for they are slaves
Beneath the water they are blind.

But Jesus' Hand stretched out to hold
my flailing arm, by faith I knew
His was the strength that would enfold
And would my grasp on faith renew
To draw me to the Land of Gold
Where once for all, the skies are blue.

Long, long ago, when Jesus came
His journey through the sea would show
The waves would soon His Body claim
But from the sea new Life would flow
Above all other names, His Name
The only Name for all to know.

And I, with many, thanks to Him
Know Life in an eternal way
My sight now is no longer dim
The sky now is no longer grey
For in that sea I used to swim
Forever will God's Love display.
