Sovereign Grace

by Jan Dickerson

The world is loud, a tempest in the night,
With shifting sands and blinding, fleeting light.
But in the quiet of a broken soul,
Thy sovereign voice spoke out and made me whole.
No merit of my own, no righteous deed,
Could ever match the depth of all my need;
It was the blood of Christ, and Christ alone,
That paid my debt and claimed me for His own.
I yield my will, my fleeting earthly days,
To live a life that echoes with His praise.
The old is passed, the crucified within,
Now washed and ransomed from the power of sin.
Let others chase the shadow of a name,
I bow before the Lamb who bore my shame.
For what is life, if not to serve the King,
And at His feet, my broken trophies bring?
The Book is open, steadfast, pure, and true,
A lamp unto my feet, making me new.
I stand upon the faith once given to saints,
Though flesh may fail, and weary spirit faints.
For through the trial, through the narrow way,
His hand upholds me to the perfect day.
No compromise, no turning from the cross,
Counting the gains of earth as empty loss.
O Jesus, take each breath, each heartbeat too,
And let my hidden life point straight to You.
Until the day the trumpet of God shall sound,
And all Thy ransomed saints are heaven-bound,
I'll lift my voice, I'll run the patient race,
A sinner saved by sovereign, boundless grace.
