Matters of the Heart

by Debra Brent © 2025

This world today we populate,
Is a very scary place;
From guns and violence, hatred speech,
It boils down to faith.

It's sad to know we live in angst,
Just going to the store;
Or send kids off to school,
Pray they will walk back thorough that door.

Whether date night or a movie,
Outdoor concert, restaurant, mall;
Even staying put inside our home,
Could end in a downfall.

Mass shootings, assaults, bullying,
How anger is displayed;
But guns should not be the focus,
That's only a band-aid.

The wounds which need to truly heal,
Are made not out of steel;
What's broken in this world today,
Begins with how we feel.

Abandonment, neglect, abuse,
To name off just a few;
What happened in our course of life,
Is what we must break through.

Yet when these wounds lay wide open,
Void of a tender touch;
Reactions to the pain they've caused,
We often see too much.

What our nation sorely needs right now,
Is so easy to find;
Just take a look inside each chest,
'Cause that's where we divide.

Some beat time to trauma of past;
While others lack His word;
When feel there's nowhere safe to turn,
The devil's what is heard.

Our spirit craves a change of pace,
And hope to be returned;
Or this killing off society,
Continues how we'll burn.

We can't control the actions of,
Another, but ourselves;
The work we seek to make a change,
Begins first how we dwell.

Free will should not be used to hurt,
Or kill another soul;
Instead we need to flip the script,
And heal our hearts back whole.

One by one this can be done,
We each can play our part;
To bring back kindness, trust, and love,
God's gift of a new start.

Let's seek instead such tools,
To repair what has been lost;
A world in which to live again,
Where fear is not the cost.
