Bloom Despite

by Alyssa Whitlock © 2026

I was asked if I knew pain.
Oh, do I know-
but does sunlight know the rain?
Does a butterfly know its cocoon?
Do beautiful flowers know the drought?
Does the sun know the moon?
Does good health know itself without?

I know a lack of rain—
I've seen flowers bloom despite.
I know darkness. I know pain.
But I've seen God's light
after the darkest night.
