What are we building on?
Have we reached solid ground?
We all long for a victory won
But find our way is bound.
How much we see ourselves
As builders of the towers
Of books that fill our Christian shelves
And learning through the hours.
In knowledge we may grow
But deeper we must be
Whatever finally we show
Must be forever free.
Free from the broken earth
To rest alone on Christ
Foundation of a perfect worth
For nothing else sufficed.
His Gospel holds the key
In it, all else is gone
For He has cleared decisively
What once for us had shone.
Whatever we may say
Is silenced by the Blood
There cannot be another way
Where earthly blossoms bud.
On Him, the Rock, we rest
Immovable, secure
The haven for the dispossessed
And sins' eternal cure.
For us the well is deep
But He is there aglow
He's in that place to save His sheep
And melt our earthly snow.
Only to build on Him
Only in Him arise
Our sight of Him, no longer dim
His Light before our eyes!
