Jonah

by George Chartier

A prophet once did seek a ship to flee from God's own face,
He chartered with the heathen men to hide from his disgrace,
A tempest came unto the sea for God knew he was there,
The heathen men cried to their gods, for this they could not bear.

The prophet then came to the top of this, the ship of sin,
He told the heathen men that God had sent the storm for him,
He told them then to throw him out, into tumultuous sea,
And God had him within a fish, for days, not one but three.

Within the fish this prophet cried with weeds about his head,
He had been cast within the deep, by grace, he wasn't dead,
The waters compassed him about and only God could hear,
This prophet was imprisoned there, because of his own fear.

Then God spoke there unto the fish and said to vomit out,
The prophet who had cast away in seas of sin and doubt,
To Nineveh this prophet went though not of his own will,
For even if they would repent, he still did wish them ill.

The men from peasant unto king did there in sackcloth mourn,
They cried to God and did repent for all the sin they'd borne,
So Jonah left the city there, the ones who did repent,
He found a place to sit and watch as he'd hope wrath was sent.

And angrily he sat outside, for he did judgment seek,
For all the men who did repent, to whom God had him speak.
But judgment never came to them because they did repent,
And yet all in the end we see is Jonah's discontent.

So let us not flee from the Lord but let us seek his face,
For in the end your life will be known only for disgrace.
O follow ye the Lord's command lest in the end you see,
The wishing to destroy the ones that God would have set free.
