We Say...

We say we would follow Jesus
but we'd rather write a thesis,
walking on water we promote
but we are still safely in the boat.

We say "what would Jesus do"
but we still love to have our view,
we surrender - by our design
our faith and ease we intertwine.

We say that we will love the outcast
while in our cocoon we have a blast,
people are left dying without hope
yet without our coffee we can't cope.

We say we would lay our life down
yet when scarred we get a frown,
we say "take up your cross - a must"
but we're afraid to choke on dust...

He says "come to me - all you weary"
my yoke much deeper than a theory,
rest forever in My favour
let Me give your life its flavour!

then...

We say help me in my weakness
may I stay true in the deepness,
covered in the dust of my Rabbi
knowing He is my greatest ally.

Note: Following Jesus is not an easy path, but it is a beautiful journey filled with blessing.

The students who followed their rabbi closely in Jesus time were said "to be covered in the dust of their rabbi" for their roads were dusty and they wore sandals so when following close behind they would end up being covered in dust. The dust mentioned in stanza 4 is referring to this - we say we want to follow Jesus, but our lives actually shows that we hate to choke on dust. This idea is revisited in the last stanza, when the writer is repentant and seeking God's strength and guidance.
