Reasons to Stay

by Debra Brent © 2026

It's not just been since cancer,
Where perspective's grown so dark;
Repeated trauma through the years,
Extinguised my bright spark.

Addictions, I have fought so hard,
Despair, full on display;
Believed maybe I was too much,
Then slowly drift away.

I'd pull back from my circle,
Held hostage inside my mind;
Those voices taunted endlessly,
Became what they defined.

Til one day a lone stranger,
Who knew nothing of my past;
Recalled his own hardships,
I soon no longer felt outcast.

It took another's journey,
To seek out and find my worth;
Heal from regret, shame, and anger,
My heart needed rebirth.

The tides, they have now turned,
This time, it's meant for you to hear;
Those feelings are not facts,
And yes, each voice can disappear.

It took a ton of work,
To shed fear, guilt, and unbeliefs;
Of loser, failure, a mistake,
All which had been a thief.

They stole of precious time,
Saw me sprint, flee, was on the run;
Never can you heal a past when,
You've all but let them won.

This coach voicing his strength,
Is how I let the good Lord in;
A turning point towards a new life,
Free from my darkest sins.

'Cause God above, He saved me,
From quite a destructive path;
No longer built by others,
But solely, my own two hands.

He forgave countless wrongs,
Held me through every stage of grief;
Soothed of my wounded parts,
With promises I'd longed to seek.

He offered boundless hope,
Something I'd thought was all but lost;
He paved my way towards freedom,
Purpose was the only cost.

It's taken several years,
To reach this point in life of peace;
Along each unmarked road I walk,
His hand, not out of reach.

The Lord our Savior, rescued me,
With courage, faith, and grace;
Taught differences between each voice,
Which lied straight to my face.

His truth, it has become my norm;
His word, my resting place;
His wisdom reframed convictions,
His arms, where I feel safe.

I now share out my own story,
Of how He saved my soul;
Please, if you are still struggling,
Know YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

Just reach up to the sky above,
Shout out for Him by name;
He'll leave the 99 for you,
Help guide you through the pain.

So if you need reasons to stay,
Wake to the morning light;
Place one hand on your beating heart;
His love, your will to fight.
