Waves

by Paul Purday

The waves roll onward, leaping. as they go
To glint and foam, as pulled by greater power
than stiff sea breezes, for they ebb and flow
With regularity that marks each hour
upon the tumult of the living tides
They rise, retreat, and roll on shingle strides.

The waves of life come rolling on the breeze
Advance, retreat, and whether night or day
Submerge sometimes, upon the highest seas
Or else, bathe us within its lovely spray
Often pleasing, often painful, but will
through faith, hold us above its waters still.

For Jesus felt those waves when in the world
Consuming waters, devilish and cold
The Spirit's standard raised and then unfurled
The flag marked with His Blood amid the Gold
And soon His own, in wonder then would see
The Man who lives for all eternity
