The heart of the gospel has always been
The truth of the substitution -
A way that God can deal with sin,
By way of complete retribution:
And yet the sinner is allowed to go free,
Forgiven and washed of all stain,
Because once upon an old rugged tree,
Christ suffered unutterable pain.
Christ drank the cup of wrath in full
For all who trust in His name,
Though He himself kept all of the rules
He lovingly took all the blame.
When we with our works could never come through
God came through big with His Son.
All other religions tell you what to do,
But grace tells you what Christ has done.
So rest in the truth of this wondrous exchange,
That God gave His Son in your place,
Then admire the wisdom that has so arranged,
Such a meeting of justice and grace.
