The Word Became Flesh. John Ch. 1 v. 14

by Dennis Donald

October.
"Spend your overdraft,
We've credit terms.
Be jolly!"
The trees are clothed with autumn leaves,
The shops with plastic holly.

We've cardboard reindeer, tinny tunes,
And miles and miles of trappings.
The presents may be rubbish, but
Boy!, what about the wrappings?

The presentation must be right,
Impressions never lacking.
Aunt Polly purrs with pleasure as
She pokes around the packing.

It's seldom done the other way,
A treasure in brown paper.
One glance, the gift is thrust aside,
Perhaps to open later.

God's thoughts are on His present,
Not on how He might enhance
A Gift, itself quite priceless.
He's prepared to take the chance
That some will see the wrapping
Which they look at every day,
More common than brown paper,
Give a shrug, and turn away
Quite unaware God's Christmas Gift
Is one designed to win
Their heart, their all. It's God Himself
Wrapped up in human skin.
