My Wish

by Bill Thomas

Can you capture the splendor of the sunset
And preserve it under glass?
The beauty of a rose will you forever get,
By lifting it from the grass?
Is it possible to make things we cherish stay;
Never wanting them to change or go away?

Ah, that's the desire of the human heart;
To maintain that which is most dear,
It achieve; hold close; never let depart.
To lose it: the heart's one and greatest fear.
Often things most special we don't recognize
Until, one day, they begin to vanish before our eyes.

Then we, in vain, try to grab, hold in hand,
The ever-flowing stream of life, love,
The joy of laughter, togetherness and all times grand.
"Let it last forever," we plead to the Lord above.
"To everything a season," comes the blunt reply
"Would you cage the redbird and forbid him to fly?"

No, beauty, a mere moment in time is not;
Love and happiness caged will not flourish and grow
Things most cherished can never be caught.
That which is most precious must be let go.
So be free, child, look back do not, but soar.
Of all that heaven offers, my wish for you is more.
