We Were There That Day

by Billy Creighton © 2020

More than anything else Jesus prayed a prayer
this was just for me and you.
"Father forgive them" He cried as He died
"for they know not what they do"

Oh yes my friend we were there that day
As they nailed Him to the tree
For it was our sin that put Him there
When He died for you and me

Yet it was just hours before His death
when we hailed Him with our branches
"Hosanna to the King" we cried
As we welcomed Him with dancing

But ah so soon our hearts laid bare
when we voiced what lay therein.
As He stood before His scoffers we cried
"Crucify Him crucify Him"

Yes we wanted to be rid of the Son of God
He exposed what we really are
At war with Him and in love with sin
And estranged from Him by far

Yet His prayer is still the same today
As it was when we nailed Him to the tree
"Come unto Me with all your sin
And I will set you free"

He's the same today as He always was
Not willing that any should perish
And He still reaches out with those nail-pierced hands
Our love He longs to cherish.
