What the Heck

by Kathleen Higham

Peeking through my window, the dawn
Another day begins, another gone
A catchy tune called, "What the Heck"
Rides with me on my trusty Trek.

Aging has its moments, I attest
Details park inside the mind to rest
Wishing I was younger it is true
Things I'd have changed if I knew.

Oh, "What the Heck," I say
This is just a beautiful day
The wind steals my breath away
A time to enjoy my life and play.

Here and there a little tweak
Joints murmuring to me then creak
To say nothing of my boney rear
At least I tucked away my fear.

A bumpy, thumpy beat in my heart
It wasn't there at the very start
Refusing to acknowledge a tiny ache
I'm fine, just fine for heaven's sake.

The Irish pushes hard inside my soul
Nothing can deter me from this goal
Even an anxious pain in the chest
My time, it will be my absolute best.

30 miles I plan to ride my Trek
Symptoms come, I say, "What the Heck"
There's nothing wrong with me, so sure
Oh maybe, but I was built to endure.

Feeling just a little breathy now
Moving slower like a lazy cow
Younger, how I wish this to be so
Thinking of all the things I know.

Having put my body to the test
Surely I have given it my best
Hearing the words ride merrily
A poem surfaces for me to see.

Oh, "What the Heck," I sighed
Survived this curious, furious ride
Home again to park my Trek away
Thank you Lord for yet another day….
