Ain't Life Grand

by Kathleen Higham

Ain't life grand, she'd say?
My Auntie spoke this way
Her eyes sparkled mysteriously
She enjoyed every single day.

Her life was not an easy one
As hardships quickly came
If this had been my life
I would never be the same.

But she never challenged God
Instead just loved Him more
No matter what the burden
That was presented at her door.

"Ain't life grand," she'd say?
I don't know about that
So many years, tears that fell
While in her chair she sat.

Heartache that immobilized
Yet she complained, nil
Every trial that God allowed
Well, she thanked Him still.

Agonizing pain would touch her
Before the morn would start
Age had crippled her, it's true
But a fire burned in her heart.

"Ain't life grand," she'd say?
I can see her face right now
She loved life, loved the Lord
Got through it all somehow.

"Ain't life grand," she'd say?
From the heavens I can hear
"Ain't life grand," oh yeah!
Meet you there Auntie dear.
