The Serpent's Taunt

by Samuel Saville

Reject what was spoken, you can disobey,
The serpent said to her, "Did God really say?"

You will be like God and create you own epic,
Choose your own purpose, decide your own ethic,

Amazing is he and benevolent yes,
But a slave to his law you remain nonetheless,

So throw off these shackles of standards and right,
Replace them with virtues of pleasure and might,

A new explanation you must first surmise,
No Creator's intent or heavenly prize,

No Designer, design, meaning, or moral,
By chance you were made, just as worthless as royal,

Not the image of God, but descendant of beast,
Of such are you from the great to the least,

Man's moral mechanics will remain the same,
Respect and advance the most important thing,

But this is, of course, not God's holy will,
But is mankind himself and the gods he instills,

Original sin then a transcending law,
It will judge and condemn, it will weigh on us all,

So be ever ready this menace to shun,
For great is it's power to bring conviction,

For some will forsake their deity cast,
To be reconciled, a blind hope they will grasp,

They aim to oppress and make guilty your conscience,
Have faith in your doubt that the unseen is nonsense,

Believe that beliefs can't be believed to be true,
Except this belief lest you sound like a fool,

Moreover, proclaim your upright position,
Since truth is opinion this must be your mission,

Teach all the pursuit of pleasure is wise,
A natural endeavor to self actualize,

Lest some by archaic moral be blinded,
It must be instilled that all be open-minded,

So if man lay with man, or mankind with beast,
If woman with woman, alive with deceased,

The bigot may charge this unnatural or vile,
But preference made truth makes alternate lifestyles,

Beware of romance that may woo you to vows,
That bind you from some future pleasures of now,

Feel no obligation these vows to maintain,
To man or to culture or nature the same,

If a mother to be strikes down her unborn,
The strong own the weak so reserve her no scorn,

No reason makes just a conviction of death,
But seek reasons for life before ones first breath,

For do not assume life's value innate,
It's best for us all if his way she can't make,

If some do succeed much more than you do
By supposed discipline and creating value,

Do not be fooled by this fiscal charade,
Claim greed as their god whom they serve to be paid,

When no absolute truth to prescribe what is good,
Then no inference of value can be understood,

Only preference of man as diverse as its people,
While some seem peculiar, all morally equal,

Tis a social injustice to judge of less worth,
The focus of some that earns less of the earth,

But to each as he needs and no reason be sought,
For to be as gods, you must be judged not,

But with righteous fervor rebuke and impeach,
Those oppressive naysayers who spew but hate speech,

Hate hate as a prime for sake of its own,
Might its object be evil is best never shown,

For-bay they may judge and may act and may harm,
With the mask of nonviolence see that they disarm,

Plead mercy when foes hold the gavel of power,
Who count equal your worth from a common endower,

But reciprocate not for man givith rights,
And mercy but slows the collectivist flight,

Useful the weak as pawns for your cause,
Once useless their presence a problem to solve,

If yet found convicted is one by his peers,
Demand not his life, but his gold and his years,

For if life precedes truth and may shape it with time,
The worth of the first in the second shan't lie,
