Hey Buddy! What Did You Do Today? (A Child's Response)

by Bryan Miles

I had a cup of tea on the planet Mars
With a monkey and a walrus who were sitting in cars
Their headlights were as big as the distant moon
That glistened and shined like a silver spoon
We shared a chocolate cupcake and a cookie or two
Then we all went rafting on a wooden shoe
It spiraled around the planet in a lemon sea
Until we hit the side of a licorice tree
We nibbled on the splinters of a fallen branch
Then the monkey and the walrus started to dance
Their feet were swiftly gliding on the water's edge
And they bumped into a hive that was sitting in a hedge
The hive was full of bees with candy coated stingers
We swatted at them all, but kept licking our fingers
Then all of a sudden, or suddenly quick
We were deep in a jungle performing a trick
The monkey juggled bananas, the walrus tossed a cane
On the end of his nose till it started to rain
The rain came down in buckets, pails with shovels too
And then I took a nap, till I opened my eyes to you

What about you dad? What did you do today?
Did you ride to the office in a wagon of hay?
Did you see a giant dinosaur near the fifty-fifth floor?
Did you slide down his back and go to the store?
Did you sword fight your way home? Did you beat the shining knight?
Did you hop on a train or catch a flight?

"So many questions," the father said
He tousled the hair on his little boy's head
"You've had a busy day, too busy for me"
Then they both shared a sip from the lemon sea
The father winked his eye as he said a grateful prayer
Thanking the Lord that He was really there
Watching over his son, no matter where he went
The gift of imagination is time well spent
Then they both bowed their heads in praise to their Creator
"Better get us up the steps Lord! Here comes an alligator!"
