Because He loved us so

by Bettina Van Vaerenbergh

The day our dearest Lord Jesus hung on the cross;
He suffered unimaginable pain, and the greatest loss.
Bystanders spit, mocked and cursed the name -
Of God's only Son, who lived a life without blame.
"Father, forgive them, they know not what they do…"
Thus He prayed for the people, and for the soldiers too.
As Jesus' life force was slowly leaving Him,
He was crushed beneath the full weight of mankind's sin.
In righteous wrath the Father turned His face away;
And a sudden, deep darkness fell over the day.
Jesus' body hurt so much, and His soul even more -
The Godhead had never been separated before.
The Son and His Father had always been One;
Ever since the beginning, long before time had begun.
For the first time since He left His heavenly throne,
Jesus felt completely and utterly alone.
His love for God the Father was beyond compare,
And the pain in His heart was almost too much to bear.
He looked up to heaven, to a pitch black sky;
"My God, why have You forsaken Me?" was His desperate cry.
His work was now finished, the Savior bowed His head -
His own He had loved until His very last breath.
He drank the full cup of God's anger, for you and for me;
On that cross sin was condemned, so we would never be.
Of His own free will Jesus took up His cross;
Because He loved us so, He suffered so great a loss.
Because He loved us so, He suffered unimaginable pain -
All the glory be forever to Jesus' name,
All the glory be forever to the Lamb that was slain!

Luke 9:60
King James Version

"Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury
their dead: but go thou and preach the
kingdom of God."
