Jesus our merciful High Priest

by Bettina Van Vaerenbergh

Jesus Christ is not a distant High Priest,
One who can't be touched by our infirmities:
He experienced our human weaknesses;
He carried our sicknesses, our disease.

When Jesus walked among us in the flesh;
He was tempted just as we are, in everything.
Though tested severely, many a time -
The Savior was blameless, He never did sin.

Christ was a Son, yet He learned obedience
By the great sufferings He went through.
With tears in His eyes He offered up prayers;
As He also prays now, for me and for you.

Because of His godly fear Jesus was heard;
He did what pleased God, until His last breath.
The Son always relied on, always trusted -
In God who was able to save Him from death.

Jesus became the author of eternal salvation
Unto all those who believe, and His Word obey.
A High Priest after the order of Melchizedek;
So God has declared it, forever and a day.

Come therefore boldly to the throne of grace,
Brethren, let us come boldly indeed! -
That we may obtain mercy, and find grace;
Strength in trouble, help in times of dire need.

Seeing we have such a great High Priest,
Let's cling to our faith, hold fast our profession…
In every circumstance, Jesus knows our needs;
He's always interceding for us in heaven!
