John 1

by John Bianchina © 2021

The Word was present in the beginning,
and created things, to have a meaning.
In humans, He created a place for light there to shine.
Darkness couldn't comprehend this creation so fine.
There came a man to bear witness of the light,
a witness to Him, who is all power and might.
The light became flesh, not through the blood of man,
He came to earth in the will of the only One I AM.
As many as who believe in His Kingdom,
so many in Him will receive their freedom.

The man was John and he told everyone
the light is Jesus, God's one begotten Son
John said, "as the law is given through Moses,
such is grace and truth received through Jesus"
The religious leaders asked John, "Are you the Elijah?"
"No," said John, "I am as the prophet named Isaiah."
"Why do you baptize if you don't have the power?"
"Because," said John, "I baptize with only water,
and He is coming, savior of the world,
written in our scriptures, as foretold."

The Lamb of God shall baptize with the Holy Spirit
and redeem everyone who believes as they receive it
Behold, and see the Son of God who came from above
and received the Spirit of God in the form of a dove.
Two followed Jesus because of what John was speaking.
Jesus turned around and asked, "what are you seeking?"
"Rabbi", they replied, "where do you stay?"
They remained with Him as from that day.
Called to follow were Simon, Philip, and Nathanael,
who when he saw Jesus, called Him the King of Israel.
