If we will be like Him, He must become
Like us, but sin apart. Downward, He would
Know loss and suffering more than man can plumb
And more than any mind has understood.
As on our level, now with flesh and blood
He entered in our sinful darkened way
To taste our sorrowing journey like a flood
That in its flow might wash us all away.
How could we be like Him, the Lord of all?
How could our humanness, so frail, be in His eyes?
Only as Man, could He approach our fall
And in His dying breath confound the 'wise.'
Now men and women, all can know His Grace
So hard the stony path that He would go
Lower than all, the scene of man's disgrace
In knowing this, we will His likeness show.
We can but wonder at the magnitude
Of God's eternal, awesome, loving plan
Who He became, provokes our gratitude
The Son of God became the Son of Man.
Like Him! This glorious Man of God's own choice
Like Him! No other Man for us could be
For those, in faith, who recognise His voice
Shall live in Love through His eternity.
