Obadiah - A Punishment For Pride

by Tracy A Andrews © 2025

Obadiah is an interesting book,
I implore you all to go have a look,
A minor prophet's book of one chapter,
But he certainly wasn't an amateur.

It's almost like the book wants to stay hidden,
As it's describing a great affliction,
To be poured upon the nation of Edom,
For watching while Israel lost their freedom.

The book describes the great pride of Esau,
Refusing to help against trouble he saw,
When calamity came upon his brother, Jacob,
Edom watched with joy, giving Israel the snub.

Hate for a brother is what God despises,
And Edom and other nations, it's said, He chastises.
But in truth, of Edom, nothing with remain,
While Israel, through their Messiah, will again reign.

Obadiah in Hebrew means 'Servant of God',
Of this prophet's humility I am awed.
He doesn't want attention from the Word he gave,
He just signs it as a servant of the God who saves.
