Envy

by Eugene Whitney © 2024

It's very hard to understand
Why those who ignore God,
May seem to prosper more than those
Who worship him with awe.

Why do we tend to envy things
That others do possess,
Than focus on eternity
When God will surely bless?

The good news is God does forgive
The envy we confess,
And his forgiveness is a gift
We need when we transgress.

So, why would we prefer success
in temporary ways,
When life eternal is at stake?
It's knowing God that pays.

He is our refuge and our joy,
Our reason to be here.
Our love for God should matter more
Than things that disappear.
