How this came about is quite remarkable.
Titus ordered that the temple be left undamaged, but a fire broke out in it. The fire melted the gold in the temple, which ran down and into the cracks between the stones. In their excitement to get the gold, the soldiers forgot their orders and ripped the stones apart to get the gold. So, despite the efforts of the Roman general, the prediction of Jesus was fulfilled exactly.
