Imagine That: Forgetfulness

Dad drove into the driveway and switched off the engine. He seemed to be in
a daze. I got out and walked to the front door, but my parents were still
sitting in the car. They looked as if they were asleep with their eyes open.
"Come on!" I shouted, "I can't get in without the key!"
Dad opened the car door and shoved his hand into his pocket. He produced the
keys and smiled.
"Well, I guess we must live here," he said. Mum followed him to the door and
I waited, while Dad fumbled with the lock. He seemed to have forgotten what
to do. Eventually he got the key into the hole and turned it. We went in.
I went to the TV and switched it on. Mum stood in the room, looking around
at it as if she had just seen it all for the first time. She had the same

The phone rang. Mum looked startled. She looked at the phone for a while,
and I waited. She didn't know what to do with a ringing phone.
"Answer the phone Mum!" I shouted.
"How do you do that?" she said.
"Pick it up!"
Mum hesitated, still at a loss. I went over and grabbed it.
"See?" I said, "You hold it up to your ear, and talk into the little
holes!""
Mum tried to do what I told her, but she seemed to be doing it for the first
time.
"Hello?" squeaked a voice, "Hello? Is anyone there?"
"Yes," I said, "Mum's on the other end.""
"Mavis? Is that you?"
"I, I think so?" said Mum.
"Are you feeling OK? You don't sound very well?"
"I'm fine," said Mum, "Who are you?"
"Don't you recognize my voice? That's a good one! Is
