It is a cold day and you have two glasses. One of them is an old glass, thin but solid. Its been in the family for years. The other glass is brand new, thick and shiny and of fine quality. You plunge both glasses into hot water and what happens (besides burning your hands!) and why does it happen?

You Mum's going go bananas over you today. . . the best quality glass, the thick one, broke in the hot water! Why? Because thick glass expands unevenly, so stress builds up before the heat gets to all of it - hence a crack!
