Special Effects: Superstition

I was early. I stood beside a tree and waited. She didn't come.

I waited for half an hour and she still didn't come. I was just about to go home and she turned up.

"Who's that?" she asked.

"Me!" I said.

"Who?" she said.

"Me!" I said.

"Why are you covered in bandages?" she said.

'The wind changed!" I said.

"What's that got to do with it?" she said.

"I was pulling a face and the wind changed!" I said.

She thought I was 'having her on'. She laughed at me. She accused me of lying. I unwrapped some of the bandages. She screamed and ran home.

Now I'm a wanted man, I mean boy. Everyone is looking for me. Only Mum and Dad really cared. They've hidden me in my bedroom. They tell everyone who comes that I'm not available to talk to anyone at the moment. I love my Mum and Dad. I think they are so cool.

Let me tell you a bit about them.

Before I was born they came from some country whose name I still can't pronounce. I don't know exactly where it is either. They told me it's a very small place, somewhere in the world, but it's never on the map because it's so small.

They tell me stories about their country, sometimes. Strange stories. I don't understand it, much. Mum says it's probably just as well. She doesn't really want me to know much about it. That's a bit strange too, I reckon.

In that other country. Mum said, all the women wear bee bonnets. This is so they can keep bees in them. Imagine that! I'm glad I don't have to wear a bonnet, and I'm sure glad I don't have any bees buzzing round my head. I'd be stung! Bees know when I'm around, and they seem to know I don't like them.

Another thing they have in my parent's country is cats. That's not too peculiar, except that those cats all have bells on. Mum said the reason they have bells on is to warn the mice, so there are lots of very happy mice in that place.
