The Garden

by Paul Purday

To walk lush grass, sun-dappled through the trees
Resplendent garden
Dazzling flowers, and drowsing of the bees
But hearts would harden
For we have captured what the garden sees
A serpent moving
For we have lost direction in the breeze
Our company with God, His way removing.

It's not that we have lost the beauty now
Creations glory
Still fills our thirsty hearts and will allow
A pleasant story
Lost innocence with God, cause us to bow
And see our history
Where failure's sorrow holds beneath the bough
of the wrong tree, a tearful mystery.

Now in the rain-starved garden we must stay
Our hearts are breaking
So like the One who walked the desert way
Though not forsaking
The plight of man, His Father's voice obey
And only loving
Oh, who can know His love and not display
The beauty of His Grace, His glory proving.

Can we not walk now in a garden green?
Full of His wonder
And hope for beauty more than we have seen
This we will ponder
While walking in the earthly fields to glean
As we are waiting
For His return, and on His presence lean
The fields are now a brighter green creating.

The beauty of His Land and Garden show
His presence filling
Our hearts, where restoration would bestow
His blessing spilling
Within the Garden of His Grace and flow
With bright perfection
A heavenly land where all His beauties grow
Eternal plants, the fruit of His affection.
