His Grace Sets Me Free

by Kathleen Higham

It was just a fabulous day
And fishing was on my mind
And I searched the rocky bottom
Studying and hoping to find

A coral reef that was teeming
And waiting for my line
A vision of a perfect fish
And on him I will dine

But we have met a pesky one
Who constantly steals my bait
And when I try to land him
I am always a little too late

But finally I snagged him
Then tossed him on the floor
Never gave him another thought
He won't take my bait anymore

And God was good to us today
We caught many fish to eat
But then I noticed the pesky one
Lying so still at my feet

I saw that he was beautiful
My heart was filled with shame
I should have thrown him back
To the home from which he came

So I was feeling pretty low
As I scooped him from the boat
Knowing in my heart of hearts
That this fish was going to float

Then I tossed him in the ocean
But with a pleasant shock I see
That fish was gone in a flash
To his home beneath the sea

It came to me God's perfect Grace
He decided that creature's fate
Returning him to his earthly home
A fish not worthy of my plate

And I can see His message
For it became painfully clear
That I'm not worthy either
But my God is always near

When I'm down He scoops me up
Gives me time then sets me free
And His Grace covers me completely
Till He comes till He comes for me
