A Child Like Love

by Kathleen Higham

A grasshopper sitting at my feet
I knew just what I would do
This bug will devour everything
So I crushed him with my shoe

For a moment I felt regret
An unpleasant feeling inside
It was something God created
Killing it gave me no pride

Memories took me back in time
To a child with eyes shining bright
Holding a grasshopper in her hand
Pleading can I keep him tonight

What happened to that child like joy
That elevates the life of a bug
Dancing off with her little friend
But first she gives me a hug

I am overcome with love for her
With tender visions of my child
And God wants us to retain this
As an adult be meek and mild

It's not about saving ugly bugs
But remembering how we felt
An innocent love for everything
A heart only a child could melt

Another grasshopper sits at my feet
And I remember that precious day
Can I keep him with me tonight
And I smiled as I walked away

Luke 18:16-17
