What love is

by David Causby

I asked myself what love was
I struggled to reply
Within myself was nothing
To answer my heart's cry
No beauty to attract me
No pleasure to behold
No words of sweetest comfort
To speak unto my soul

I asked my friends what love was
Their answers came so fast
A feeling of peace, a sense of calm
Devotion to life's last
Holding hands with loved ones
A candlelit romance
Growing old together
A slow and sensuous dance

I asked my kin what love was
They said it was the hours
We felt each others' presence
While talking from afar
Loyal to the family
Faithful through all ill
Caring at the bedside
Of one who soon is still

I asked my Lord what love was
His answer thrilled my soul
For though I was a stranger
And wandering in the cold
His blood became my ransom
It paid the price of sin
It flowed into my being
When I asked Him to come in
