A Dollar's Worth

by Mac Parks

We sat down to eat dinner
As we normally do.
My parents smiled at each other,
"We each have gifts for you."

Mama grinned excitedly
Waiting for my father.
He reached into his pocket
And pulled out a single dollar.

Mama said "Its my turn now."
She showed me in her hand
She had one dollar in loose change.
I did not understand.

"The gifts we gave make a point.
There's something we must show you."
I held both gifts as she asked
"Which one is of more value?"

My reply was "neither gift"
She said "Now that is true,
It's the same thing with the gifts
Our God has given you."

"He gave you some He did not others
And others not to you,
But He sees it all the same;
None of more value."

"One works best for vending machines
And others at the store.
They might be used for different things
But neither is worth more."

He made you for a purpose.
Thank Him for what you've got.
Never ask why He gave to others
Things you were given not.
