The Thief

by Kathleen Higham

There are no words to express
Burdens come and hedge me in
For I feel my unworthiness
My flesh crawls with sin

On this fabulous, sunny day
I am peddling down a trail
Deep and heavy thoughts come
I pray, "God don't let me fail"

Humbled by this gift to write
Yet, my mind has been a blank
The gift, "Have You taken It"
For a moment, my heart sank

Stopping to rest in the Everglades
As we parked our bikes to walk
Once again, You come to me
I am wanting so much to talk

Oh my Lord, please give me
Those precious words I need
Wanting to serve You completely
Let me write for You, I plead

Suddenly, a black crow comes
Then, on my bike he settles
Pulls back the zipper on my bag
With all my stuff, he meddles

Busily throwing things about
This and that lands on the ground
Finally, in his beak, he grasps it
I am wondering what he's found

A woman is watching in amusement
It's my business card he took
A burst of laughter bellows out
The card is about my book

Lord, I have so neglected You
Feeling sorry for myself
Not writing, not doing anything
Your words sitting on a shelf

A realization has come to me
About what a thief can do
Stealing thoughts inside my heart
My beautiful thoughts of You

Oh God, I fell down again
But, You have lifted me high
Words, words, loving words
Flow through me with a sigh.
