Humbled Humiliated Honored

by Kathleen Higham

Often, when I pray to God
I ask to serve my best
Wanting to be spectacular
Thinking, I can pass the test

But, one day He showed me
To be humble, then to please
As a paralyzed woman cried to me
Made me fall down on my knees

We were in this restroom
And she was in desperate need
I listened as she tried to speak
In her anguish, I felt her plead

I was completely intimidated
By a stranger with garbled speech
But God had firmly guided me
To a railing she couldn't reach

I felt this woman's humility
As I quietly closed the door
Lifted her from her wheel chair
God didn't need to say anymore

There was a trust and thankfulness
Seeing passionate, grateful eyes
I knew I was serving God
At last, I came to realize

That serving God is spectacular
I was honored in this place
It doesn't matter where you are
Looking at her, I saw His face

So, if we help one another
With love, we'll finally see
We are serving the Lord our God
For the least of these, is He.
