A SolitaryTear

by Kathleen Higham

It all began with a single tear
A face etched in agonizing pain
This man, born to die for us
So innocently, He was slain

I imagine a Father sobbing
The sacrifice was His Son
A solitary tear rolls down
Hearing the words,"It Is Done"

Many, many tears will fall
As we will share this sorrow
A never ending fact of life
Our tears ring in the morrow

It all began with a single tear
We will cry for every reason
But, He promised it will surely end
Our grief, for only a season

My tears alone seem endless
Believing I have filled an ocean
Tears, tears, overwhelming tears
This uncompromising emotion

Yet, relentlessly we release them
In shuttering, wracking despair
Oh, but only for a season
Then, no more pain to bear

It all began with a single tear
A Scripture, deep, I have kept
The depth of love so revealing
Jesus, Jesus wept.

John 11:35
