Final breath

by Dennis Evans

Of all the past behind me
the times I've spent with you,
often seem to be the ones
my heart is clinging to.

The unknown that lies before me
has often led to fear,
but always there would be those thoughts
and memories held dear.

Through the fire of trials
and sorrow sometimes found,
my mind would think back to the cross
and my heart would come unbound.

For nothing in my life compares
be it pain or fear of death,
when I think of you Christ Jesus
as you took that final breath.
