Woundedness

by Kathleen Higham

Woundedness, a spiritual gift
That some of us come to see
Certainly not wishing for it, but
It is where we need to be.

Lessons sometimes come so hard
We inhale them with a shock
Unimaginable thoughts attack
We are speechlees, cannot talk.

Woundedness, a spiritual gift
I would rather have another
But seeing it first hand, I know
I saw this in my Mother.

Oh, she was truly wounded
Her losses leave me cold
She took them on, one by one
Her trust in God was bold.

Woundedness, a spiritual gift
A desire to nurture for some
This is how you survive it
As you brace the world to come.

There are times when you shutter
And pray for some relief
Close your eyes and leave it
Then, hang on to your belief.

Woundedness, a spiritual gift
One that makes you strong
Woundedness may claim you
But God promises, not for long.

Having trusted everything
Though wounded you may be
Jesus had this woundedness
No one was wounded like He.

Woundedness, a spiritual gift
This is for all to see
I wait patiently, but wounded
For my God to come for me.
