God Vs. Baal

by Deborah Bell © 2015

Mount Carmel was the setting for this most momentous scene
As Ahab and Elijah proved which G/god was most supreme
Baal had his prophets of four hundred fifty men
While the Lord God had Elijah...as we watch this duel begin

Elijah laid down all the rules...one bullock for each team
Cut up and laid down on the wood...with no fire to be seen
Then call out to your god by name...and I'll call out to mine
The one that sends an answer we'll affirm will be divine

So from morning until noon...Baal's prophets sent their plea
They cut themselves with lancets...but still no god did they see
Elijah urged them...cry aloud...for he might be asleep
Then on and on to midday past...still they heard not a peep

Elijah then informed them to come near and gather round
As he repaired the altar that the prophets had broke down
He took 12 stones for Israel...as a new altar he made
He made a trench around it and on the wood the bullock laid

Four barrels full of water pour upon it...he did tell
Then go and do it twice the more...and fill the trench as well
Then came the evening sacrifice...as everyone stood still
They listened as Elijah made to his God...this appeal

Hear me...O Lord...Hear me...to these people make it known
That I'm your humble servant...and that You art God alone
Then fire from the Lord fell down...consuming everything
The wood...the stones...the dust...with not a drop of water seen

The people shook with fear as they down on their faces fell
Proclaiming that the Lord is God...and now we know it well
The God of Abraham...the God of Jacob...Isaac too
We see it all this day that there's no other God...but You...
