Do I Have Hope

by Kathleen Higham

Her question comes to haunt me
From one who suffers in disbelief
A brilliant mind so shaken
There's pain with no relief.

Do I have hope, she asks?
My heart breaks, tears fall
The question from my first teacher
The one who taught me all.

My mind reels in total shock
Then briefly comes despair, but
Her words gently remind me
That life is not always fair.

Do I have hope, she asks?
I remember the hope of my friend
The day she told me of Heaven
How our lives would never end.

On this beautiful sunny morn
I held her to my heart
For she was leaving very soon
We would live far, far apart.

Do I have hope, she asks?
Her voice lingers in my head
For her hope was my hope
These were the words she said.

The Christ in you brings hope
A hope that never dies
We will be sisters forever
I still see her soulful eyes.

Do I have hope, she asks?
Oh my friend you surely do
Jesus Christ is our only hope
And He made His home in you.
