After the Rain

by Belinda van Rensburg
https://belindaspoetry.com

The storm has passed and the sun's come out,
the birds are flitting and flying about;
butterflies dancing around in the air
and tiny black ants run from here to there.

Oh God, You gave us a beautiful place
in which to live while we're seeking Your Face.
A green garden grown from billions of seeds,
meant to supply in abundance our needs.

It's sad to see what we've done to our home -
few creatures are left who can still freely roam
in the wild open spaces as You have intended,
for largely useless their space has been rendered.

Cattle are grazing where they should not be,
and we're harvesting far too much fish from the sea.
Pollution, erosion and deforestation -
causing our planet immense devastation.

Look at the sky: it's soaked through with fog;
forcing all creatures to breathe toxic smog.
Where are the white clouds, the blue sky and fresh air?
What humans are doing to Earth is unfair.

The rain has washed and cleansed the sky,
and I look at the creatures who happily fly
around and around as they frolic and play
without a care on this glorious day.

Tonight I'll be able to gaze at the stars;
perhaps if I'm lucky I might even see Mars,
but usually when the sky's foggy and gray
I'd much rather stay in my house the whole day.
